Malka Martz-Oberlander



Malka Martz-Oberlander is an independent writer, director and producer based in Vancouver, Canada. Malka has crowdfunded almost $15, 000 in the past three years and her work has travelled to film festivals across Canada and into the U.S. Malka's plan is to fix the world through comedy and explore the new ways we can use humour to grapple with tough subjects. Her work is driven by curiosity and out-of the box thinking and a passion to talk in third person.

A young girl holds a funeral for her big sister after being left home alone (Comedy). A film for Run n Gun, Vancouver's 48 hour film competition. Premiered at the Rio Theatre in Vancouver, July 2023.

"THE FOUR CHILDREN PART 1; ZOE" (Written/Directed/Produced)
​
Teenaged, Zoe and her grandmother, Rivkah grapple with their conflicting perspectives on the Israel Palestine conflict. (Non English Language Drama). Winner of the Earl Parker Award for Jewish Film.

"DOPPEL-4U" (Written/Directed)
​
Greg Biltmore doesn't want to go to his 10 year high school reunion so he downloads an app to hire a Doppelgänger to go for him. (Comedy). A Capilano University Production.

"THE ONION EFFECT" (Directed)
​
Peter Mackenzie, a down and out writer is persuaded by his slimy publisher to write a self help book. The book tells readers to do dangerous and absurd things such as: eat a raw onion once a day, hop instead of walk, etc. This winds up filling hospitals and causing mass hysteria across the world. Faced with the issue of what to do Peter goes on live TV to promote his new book. (Absurd Comedy). A Capilano University Production.

Jim who hates his wife, discovers an urban legend on a beer bottle stating that if he is nice to his wife for 24 hours that she will disappear and something he truly needs will appear in his place. (Absurd Comedy). A Capitalist Pigs Production.

"LEAVE A MESSAGE AT THE BEEP" (Writer)
Jason's mother has just died and now he is faced with cleaning up her home. That is until his estranged sister arrives trying to convince him that their mom was actually a mafia boss. A Capilano University Production (Comedy)

It's 2020 right in the heat of the COVID-19 pandemic and teenager Alex is hellbent on trying to get vaccinated early so him and his best friend Lesley can get into an elite new coffee shop. (Comedy)

"DAVID MICHAEL FRANKEL FEINSTEIN-GOLDBERG AND THE UN-BARMITZVAH" (Writer/Director/Producer)
Premiered at the 25th Edmonton Jewish Film Festival 2021 and winner of the Earl Parker Award for Jewish Film 2020: David is a 13 year old boy preparing for his Barmitzvah with his two eccentric parents and bubbe in 1980's Vancouver, Canada. What happens when he says he doesn't want to go through with it after all?
